Born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, Mckinsey developed a passion for design at an early age. She pursued her love of the arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Costume Design, receiving formal and practical training in everything from millinery and mask-making, to jewelry design and textiles. As a student, she worked all over the country as a crafts artisan for theater and film, including the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City, Utah and the HBO mini-series, John Adams.
Upon receiving a BFA, Mckinsey started to build the foundation for her own design company while working as a Fashion Consultant at the Frances Kahn Women’s Boutique in Richmond, Virginia. She drew on her extensive knowledge of costume design and natural flair for fashion to create dynamic, high-end wardrobes for her clients. During this time, she established her own jewelry studio in her neighbor’s pool house to accommodate the growing demand for her distinctive pieces.
